HOW TO INSTALL
All Lap Delta data fields can be downloaded using the Garmin ConnectIQ app. Search for “Lap Delta”, select the desired version, and click to install. ConnectIQ will transfer the data field to the selected device at the next sync. The next step is to add the data field to a screen layout (look inside the ConnectIQ data field category). There are many settings that can be changed using the ConnectIQ app or Garmin Express.
PURCHASING
Lap Delta is free to use, but has a 10 minute lap limit and settings cannot be changed. There are no plans to enhance or further develop the free version.
Lap Delta Pro requires payment, and allows the lap time limit to be modified as well as many other advanced settings. Payment is through the Garmin payment system. Garmin allows a purchased data field to be installed on any supported Garmin device that is registered to the licensed user.
Unfortunately, the Garmin payment system does not support some key Garmin devices such as Edge cycling computers. In these cases, you need to use Lap Delta Pro Edge instead. This has identical features to Lap Delta Pro, but it uses a third-party payment system. Purchase requires entry of a code reported by the data field on your device at activity start. In this case, the purchase is associated with a specific Garmin device, but it can be transferred to a new Garmin device later if you choose to upgrade.
You can upgrade to newer versions of Lap Delta Pro and Lap Delta Pro Edge, if and when they become available. This version upgrade does not require a new purchase.
HOW TO USE
Ahead of your activity, decide how you want to trigger laps. One approach is to simply push the lap button in your activity, for example at the start/finish line of a circuit. Another approach is to mark a GPS position so that a lap is automatically triggered at that position. Additionally, the device can automatically trigger a lap when a specified distance or time has passed. These are standard Garmin features that can be enabled on your device through the menu system.
Prior to starting an activity, Lap Delta Pro will show the maximum lap time in the data field. This value will depend on your settings and available memory on the device. A lap longer than this will lead to a “Hit Max Lap Time” message, and subsequent data on that lap will be ignored. This message will go away when another lap is triggered.
Now, start an activity. This will start lap 1 and Lap Delta Pro will capture your first lap data. At this point there is no data to compare to, so Lap Delta Pro will display an animation of expanding and contracting plus signs to show that it is accumulating data. When the next lap is triggered, lap 1 will end and lap 2 will start. Lap Delta Pro will display the time delta of your current position on lap 2 relative to lap 1. A negative time delta means that your current lap is faster, while a positive time delta indicates slower. This continues until another lap is triggered, and then Lap Delta Pro will compare lap 3 versus lap 2, and so on.
The label for the Lap Delta Pro data field indicates that this is a time delta versus your last lap. The triangle symbol is the Greek letter “delta”. The label also indicates the units.
If your current lap becomes longer than the previous lap, the time delta will increase at a rate of one second every second.
SETTINGS
Lap Delta Pro supports many settings that can customize the behavior and display. Please see the Settings page for details.
